The Challenge: Cutthroat^[1] is the twentieth season of the MTV reality television game show, The Challenge, and follows Fresh Meat II. Filmed in Prague, Czech Republic, Cutthroat features a first-ever three-team format, with cast members from The Real World, Road Rules, Fresh Meat, Fresh Meat II and the Spring Break Challenge competing. The season premiered on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, and concluded with the "S#!% They Should Have Shown" special on December 22, 2010.^[2]^[3]

Gameplay

This season of The Challenge features a brand new format, consisting of three teams – Red vs. Blue vs. Grey. A race to the "Gulag" was held to determine the selections of the teams. The three players that finished last in the race – Camila Nakagawa (Spring Break Challenge), Shauvon Torres (RW: Sydney) and Emilee Fitzpatrick (RW: Cancun) – were chosen as the team captains. Those three selected players, alternating between male and female, until each team was split evenly – five men and five women on each team – see Cast and Draft sections below.^[4]

The three teams will participate in numerous challenges (sometimes called "missions"), which are followed by an elimination challenge, known as the "Gulag." The team who wins a challenge will receive a cash prize of $20,000 to be banked in their team bank accounts, as well as winning immunity from the Gulag.

The two losing teams will then be forced to choose one player of each gender from their own teams for possible elimination. Each player will cast secret votes to decide which two men and two women will battle in same-gender Gulags. The winning players will rejoin their respective teams and stay in the game, while the losing players will be eliminated from the game.^[2]

In the event a vote is tied, a run-off vote is conducted. If the team does not come to a consensus after the run-off vote, the player going into the Gulag from the opposing team selects any member of the other team to send to the Gulag.

Gulag games

Handcuffs: Players have to wrestle rings out of their opponent's hands. The first player to wrestle rings out of their opponent's hands five times wins.

Back Up Of Me: Players are tied to each other, back-to-back, and have to drag their opponent to knock over their own barrel. The first player to knock over their own barrel twice wins.

Die Hard: Players have to stand, kneel on and roll oversize dice, without any body parts touching the ground. The players have to match the number that T.J. Lavin rolls prior to the Gulag. The first player to roll their die into a designated square with the matching number facing up wins.

Swat: Players are chained by their necks at a table, and have to slap each other in the face with fly swatters (while wearing protective goggles). After multiple rounds of "swatting", players have to hold up a bucket filled with dirt with one arm, while continuing to slap their opponent in the face with fly swatters. The opponent wins if a player drops their bucket to the ground.

The Blue Team reached a tie vote in Episode 4 between Eric and Ty. A revote was required (and if there was another tie, Luke would be allowed to choose anyone from the Blue Team to go into the Gulag with) and in the revote Jenn and Derrick switched their votes, sending Eric into the Gulag.
Jenn is the only person to compete on this season that did not receive any votes to go into a Gulag.
Abram, Brad, Chet, Jenn, and Sarah never competed in a Gulag.

Notes

^{^[s]} In Episode 3, Katie was declared the winner of the Die Hard Gulag by default, after Shauvon was disqualified because she refused to compete.^[10]

^{^[b]} Brandon won the "Pole Me Over" Gulag by default, after an exhausted Ty failed to get up midway through the Gulag.^[11]

^{^[c]} Chet was removed from the competition at the beginning of Episode 6, after he suffered a concussion at the Surf's Up challenge during the previous episode.^[12]

^{^[t]} Johnny, Tyler, Theresa and Tori were chosen for the Gulag in Episode 8. However, instead of facing off in same-gender Gulags, each player was set up to face C.T. and Tina, respectively, in the "Back Up Of Me" Gulag, in a competition for who could knock over their own barrel faster. At the end of Episode 8, Theresa reached a time of 13:57. At the beginning of Episode 9, Tori beat her time, thus eliminating Theresa. The male Gulag results were shown at the beginning of Episode 9.^[13]^[14]

^{^[g]} Derrick, Tyler, Emily and Paula were chosen for the Gulag in Episode 9, but the results were not shown until Episode 10. Paula was disqualified after repeatedly grabbing the boundary chains in the Pole Me Over Gulag; therefore, Emily was declared the winner by default.^[14]^[15]
